JAVASCRIPT LEARNING EXERCISE · Workflow idea

Learn to transform data step by step using examples you can safely experiment with.

Use the self-contained sample to practice calculating a full name and age, enriching records with an optional name-based demographic estimate, calculating an average, and creating a CSV file. Keep the exercise on synthetic data; a name-based estimate can be wrong and must not be treated as a person’s identity or gender. If you test any external service, send no real personal data, review its privacy terms, and never use the estimate in employment, eligibility, or other consequential decisions.

02 / The work

5 tasks.
One useful outcome.

Teaches JavaScript data handling with sample users, an optional name-based guess, an average, and CSV output.

  1. Review the synthetic input records

Use fictional sample values rather than real names or account details.

  2. Calculate a name and age field

Observe how one record is transformed at a time.

  3. Inspect the optional estimate step

Treat name-based demographic output as an unreliable guess, not a fact.

  4. Calculate an average across records

Compare the aggregate with the sample values used to produce it.

  5. Create and inspect the CSV output

Check column names and data before using the file elsewhere.

The handoff

Transformed sample records, an aggregate value, and a downloadable CSV exercise output.

Keep in mind

The name-based estimate is probabilistic and may misgender people or reinforce assumptions. Use synthetic examples only, omit the estimate for real-world records, and do not use inferred demographic attributes for decisions or profiling.

04 / Make it yours

Set the brief.
Set the standard.

A few choices shape the work around your team.

Keep the exercise on fictional sample data

Do not substitute real people or personal records.

Review each transformation before running

Understand which fields are changed, added, or summarized.

Avoid unnecessary external data sharing

If an optional service is used, check terms and send no personal information.

Label estimates and generated files clearly

Prevent a practice output from being mistaken for verified personal data.
